"Run From Water, Hide From Wind"
It's simple. If you live in a mandatory evacuation area, have a place to stay away from the coast, preferably in the county you live in. If you're not in an evacuation area, then prepare you home to withstand a hurricane and put together a hurricane supply kit.

Hurricane Camille was one of only three Cat. 5 hurricanes ever to hit the United States. Sustained winds approached 190mph, and the storm surge was over 25' above the normal sea level. As Camille approached Pass Christian, Mississippi in 1969, residents at the Richelieu Apartments decided to have a hurricane party. One person survived. I went back to Pass Christian to see what was there today. A Winn Dixie supermarket! And the famous church has been rebuilt.
Update! A viewer sent in the end photo after Katrina. The Winn Dixie is gone. Washed away from the 28' storm surge.
